Pretoria - Botswana - Windhoek

A few years ago, the trip from Windhoek to South Africa across Botswana still used to be an adventure. Nowadays, though, the approx. 1400 kilometre long tour can be done on the tarred Trans-Kgalagadi Highway within two or three days. The service and accommodation offers in Botswana are a bit poor. But petrol is usually available.

The stretch to Maun via Ghanzi is untarred, the road quite bumpy in parts. More comfortable is to travel along the A1 to Francistown and further to Nata. The road from Maun to the southern entrance to the Chobe National Park is tarred only in parts and - especially in the Savuti area - quite sandy. A 4x4 is recommended. This also applies to a visit to the Moremi Wildlife Reserve.
